Douro cruise - Porto, Regua, Porto (Sundays) - Train upstream and boat downstream |
The boat leaves Porto towards Regua, passing under some of the famous local high level bridges. The journey continues across Portugal until it reaches a serie of locks, some being the highest in Europe. These locks and the dams have successfully tamed the river from the dangerous rapids which were responsible for many lost boats in previous centuries. When the railway was built, all wine made its journey by train until the last decades when the transport started to be made by road tankers. The Douro river passes through some of the most iconic landscapes in Portugal, terraced hills and houses surrounded by vineyards. |
