Douro cruise - Regua to Barca D'Alva (Sundays) - Boat upstream and train downstream |
Regua is the most important town on the river Douro and capital of the port wine area. From here the river port wine region of steeply terraced hills dotted with the white painted Port wine quintas. The boat passes Pinhao to which the Port Wine trade is slowly moving. Soon after Pinhao the schist soil ends marking the end of the demarcated Port Wine region and the scenery turns wilder. The boat reaches the border village of Barca d'Alva where an hour is spent ashore before the brief journey downriver to Pocinho where there is a transfer to the train for the return journey. |
