Originally a Franciscan
Convent built at the end of the 16th Century, it was recently restored
maintaining its original features and splendour.
It is now a delightful hotel
equipped with all modern facilities and services.
Accommodation comprises 18 double bedrooms and 12 twin bedrooms including one room with facilities for disabled persons. Some bedrooms have balcony
and, all have private bathroom, air conditioning, LCD screen television,
Cable TV, direct dial telephone, mini bar, safe, and hair dryer.
Hotel Convento D’Alter has a bar and restaurant serving regional Alentejo dishes. Gastronomy in this region is famous throughout Portugal, and beyond, for its strong flavours, delicious aromas and variety. The local wine shares the same popularity, wines from this region are very popular with the Portuguese people. While in the area, take the
opportunity to visit some of the famous wine producing estates, namely
Borba, Redondo or Reguengos de Monsaraz.

the village.
Alter do Chao was founded by the Romans in 204 BC but it was during the 15th Century that the village developed considerably. During the 17th Century the King ordered the construction of the Coudelaria de Alter to breed the famous Alter Real horses. Dominating the town’s centre is a five towered Castle-residence featuring a Gothic portal built by Pedro I. Other interesting monuments include the elegant Alamo Palace, the Fountains and the Santo Antonio Church. |
