Previously a beautiful Manor
House, Quinta das Lagrimas (which translates to Estate
of Tears) has 20 acres of gardens with rare and exotic species of
trees and form a botanic museum, which protects guests from the outside
world.
There
is a past rich in history and a medieval legend of love. It was here, in
the 14th century, that the forbidden love of Prince D. Pedro and Ines de
Castro was dramatically played out.
It is said that her blood still stains the stones of the spring which sprang from her tears. This story of the love of Pedro and Ines, which has survived through the centuries, is remembered in the works of authors such as Camoes, Victor Hugo and Ezra Pound. Of
course, it is still remembered today when staying at Quinta das Lagrimas.
The Quinta is located in
Coimbra, half-way between Lisbon and Oporto, near Santa Clara-a-Velha Convent.
The Lisbon to Porto motorway is 4 kilometers away.
The individually decorated spacious public rooms have direct access to the garden and remind the guests of the previous use of the property as a palace. There are 28 twin bedrooms,
21 double bedrooms and 5 suites which are all decorated and furnished in
period style. Modern facilities include air-conditioning, Satellite television,
direct dial telephone, safe and a mini bar. There are also rooms
for non smokers and disabled persons.
All the bedrooms have a bathroom en-suite with bathrobes and hair dryer. For recreation the Hotel features the Bamboo Garden Spa which has indoor pool, treatment rooms (massages, aromatherapies, etc). The massages can be experienced in the garden or, in the privacy of the guestrooms. Other facilities include
sauna, outdoor and indoor pool, turkish bath, fitness room, snooker, television
room, gift shop, conference rooms, botanical gardens and private
car park.
The sitting rooms, balconies
and the hotel library are both striking and intimate, providing the perfect
atmosphere for reading and conversation.
Over the years many famous people have come seeking the memories of Pedro and Ines. Among them the Duke of Wellington, who spent some time here during the Napoleonic invasions, the Emperor of Brazil and the Kings D. Miguel I and D. Carlos of Portugal. The University city of Coimbra,
with its many artistic treasures, is within walking distance on the other
side of the river.
This tradition is based on the University which is one of the oldest in the world. The cuisine of the restaurant at "Quinta das Lagrimas" is inspired by the manor's old recipes, and the chef aims to create imaginative and tasty dishes for the guests. He is able to transform the fresh ingredients of the region into masterpieces of Portuguese gastronomy. To compliment this, there is a wine cellar with more than 200 of the best wines from the Portuguese vineyards. The real connoisseurs has some very rare bottles to sample. A stay at Quinta das Lagrimas is an opportunity to enjoy the art de vivre, a combination of refinement and geniality. |
