| This Palace is a national
monument and for over 500 years was the home of the Earls of Belmonte.
It is located in the centre
of the old part of Lisbon and its history can be traced back over 2130
years to 130 BC.
A recent six year renovation, using traditional building techniques and materials, has transformed this property into an exclusive, luxury hotel. The high quality of the restoration has won international awards however, the final cost exceeded 24 million dollars. The result is a peaceful, authentic and luxurious Hotel with eight sumptious bedroom suites, terraces and sitting rooms. The library has more than 4000 books, publications and papers, in a variety of languages and themes including ecology, sustainable development and philosophy. The building has 59 famous 18th Century painted tile panels containing over 30,000 individual tiles. The rooms are furnished with 17th and 18th Century antiques and oil paintings. They blend perfectly with African and Japanese artefacts and the ultra-modern sculptures and beautiful carpets which also adorn the hotel. The restoration has been
carried out with the owners passion for ecological friendly and sustainable
development using lime mortar, natural ventilation, low temperature central
heating and sophisticated insulation of the roofs, floors and walls.
Power consumption is reduced to one tenth of a modern building.
The ceilings of the suites are 17th Century and one suite features the staircase from the time when that the Moors occupied much of Portugal. These luxury suites are decorated with silks and each suite is named after a Portuguese writer, artist, philosopher, traveller, inventor or ecologist.
