The Tagus area to
the north of Lisbon has the great abbeys of Alcobaca and Batalha and the
modern pilgrimage town of Fatima.
Also in he area is the walled
town of Obidos which attracts many tourists each year.
Obidos is connected to Lisbon
and the airport by fast road and a visit should not be missed,
There are manor houses nearby.
a Pousada in the castle and the small hotel, Senhora das Reinhas which has
an excellent restaurant.
To the west of Lisbon is
Sintra with many fine old buildings some of which accept paying guests
but usually need a car to reach the town.
Nearby is the attractive
fishing port of Cascais,
The coast has long sandy
Atlantic beaches and horses and bulls are bred around Santarem.
