From the centre of the village
you enter the tree covered driveway leading to this delightful palace.
The word 'paco' indicates that, in former times, the King had spent at
least one night at the house.
Architecturally, the Palace of Lanheses, is one of the best examples of a Minho manor house of the late 18th century. The house has remained in the family of the Counts of Almada since being built and has been preserved in its original state as far as possible whilst recognizing modern trends such as en suite bathrooms! In the grounds, is the old Lanheses pillory which has been classified as a national monument. The guest wing contains the
dining room pictured here and a sitting room in addition to 3 bedrooms,
two with twin beds and one with a double bed. A small kitchenette is available
for the guests to use.
In the summer, breakfast is often served on the veranda which has views across the estate vineyards and the river Lima. Later in the day, it is possible to cool down in an old granite water store which acts as a small pool. It is 60 kilometres from Porto airport, now almost all of it by motorway, and in addition there are good connections to Braga, Guimaraes and other towns to the north of Porto. The back of the house has views over the estate vineyards and across the valley of the river Lima. Lanheses is situated midway between the old sailing port of Viana do Castelo and the market town of Ponte de Lima. The house is especially suitable for these not having a car due to frequent buses from the nearby village. |
