Quinta de Santana estate
is a working farm which produces wine, honey, fruit, vegetables and timber.
A feature of the Quinta is the small private Chapel in the grounds which
dates back to 1630. The outbuildings have been converted into 3 charming
self catering cottages.
The Quinta is well located,
30 kilometers north of Lisbon and 25 kilometers to the long, sandy beaches
of the west coast of Portugal.
The Accommodation comprises : Adega House is a conversion of the old wine distillery and is next to the impressive old 'Adega' (wine cellar) with its massive old oak barrels and wine troughs. Wine is still produced in the traditional way almost every year. The cottage has its own driveway from the village road, leading through to a cobbled courtyard with an outside sitting area, the perfect place to eat out in the shade of olive trees on hot days. The accommodation is all
located on the ground floor and this cottage has an entrance hall / corridor.
It is comfortably furnished, retaining the charms of a small, typical Portuguese
house.
The kitchen has gas rings, gas oven and microwave. There is a cosy corner bench around the kitchen table, as an alternative to the large outside dining table on the terrace. There are 2 twin bedrooms and 1 bathroom featuring a bath with overhead shower. Caseiro House is situated next to the chapel and the accommodation is located on the first floor. It overlooks the mature garden with palm trees and a cobbled road. There is a small veranda which is large enough for candle-lit dinners and has fantastic views of the farm's vineyards and eucalyptus trees. The rooms are comfortably furnished, the sitting room features a wood-burning stove and the kitchen has a dishwasher and microwave. There is a boxroom and 3
twin bedrooms, one with an ensuite bathroom. There is an additional bathroom
with an old iron bath and an overhead shower
The third cottage is known as The Lemon Garden which used to be the livery stables. It is situated in a charming, cobbled lemon orchard and is separated from the Quinta yard by forged iron gates. The cottage is shaded by a mature plane tree which ensures shade even on the hottest days. A private driveway and gate give easy access to the village. The kitchen and bathrooms have been modernised and the living room features a large open fireplace. This lovely cottage is comfortably furnished in typical Portuguese style and, a particular feature are the 'coffin lid' wodden ceilings. There are three double bedrooms,
one with a large king-size bed and another with a smaller French bed.
This cottage has a large, enclosed terrace with cobblestones and lemon trees and, a private area with barbecue for dining outdoors. Guests at the 3 cottages share the large swimming pool which measures 13 meters by 18 metres and is 1.6 to 3 meters in depth. There is a washing machine in the main house which can be used on request. Facilties include metered central heating, garden / terrace furniture and cot on request. The nearby village of Gradil offers basic shopping and also has a good restaurant run by the village Mayor. For sightseeing, the area is in the middle of many interesting places to visit within an hours drive. These include the religious shrine at Fatima, the Monastery of Alcobaca, the Monastery of Batalha, the medieval town of Obidos and Sintra with its beautiful Palaces. In addition, there are local markets, the annual horse fair at Golega, local bull fights, and other individual sites of beauty and historic interest. |
