PORTUGAL - FIGUEIRA DA FOZ MARINA |
A guide to the port and other information of assistance for the cruising sailor
A river entrance where swell, tides and a bar can combine to cause a dangerous entrance. During the summer months with the northerly trade winds blowing, entry is safe in most conditions. In winter, it is suggested that the port should not be entered except in daylight on a calm day when conditions at the bar can be seen. Lights are exhibited from a signal station on a fort on the north side of the entrance when the bar is dangerous or closed but cannot be seen from the sea due to bright sodium lights in front. There is a safe marina in the river with a reception pontoon opposite the entrance. When manoeuvring from reception to the pontoon watch out for a strong cross current which comes into the marina on the ebb. Diesel is available in the fishing harbour alongside a jetty with large wooden piles covered with tyres. Figueira is a lively seaside town with the nightlife centring on the casino. There are also two cinemas.. The town also offers swimming pools, golf, tennis, and discos. The municipal market is near the marina and small supermarkets are close by. There is an occasional bullfight during the summer season. In 1602 the town was destroyed by English pirates but in 1808 the Duke of Wellington disembarked here for a final push to free the country from the French under Napoleon. A visit can be made by train to Coimbra where it is suggested that a guided tour is taken of the old University buildings. |
