PORTUGAL - VILA DO CONDE ANCHORAGE |
Only enter this small fishing harbour in calm weather, it is more suited to vessels which can take the ground. Enter shortly before high tide and follow the river and anchor in the reach below the bridge. Until recently the northern bank was used to build wooden fishing boats using traditional methods, but it has now transferred into covered buildings at the dock. The skills remain if repairs are to be carried out, especially on wooden craft. The channel is used by fishing craft and may be marked by small plastic buoys, red to port and white to starboard. At night, the floodlights on the Convento de Santa Clara and the fortified church make it an attractive anchorage. Although the main road crosses the bridge the sound is not intrusive. The medieval part of the town is near the anchorage. Interesting times to visit are St. John's night (June 23) when the town celebrates on the beach, and the craft fair which takes place the last week in July and the first week in August. Vessels with young children will appreciate the games area and the playground at the river entrance. Regular buses pass near the anchorage for visits to the city of Porto and the Port Wine Lodges |
