The hotel was originally a convent dating from the 15th century and has been classified as a national monument.

The origins of the Convento do Espinheiro are connected to a legend that tells of an apparition of the Virgin Mary above a thorn-bush (espinheiro) around the year 1400. In 1412, an oratory was built in honour of Our Lady and finally in 1458, during the reign of King Afonso V and due to increasing pilgrimage, a church and convent were built and settled by monks of the Order of St. Jeronimo.

Now the convent is converted into a magnificent 59 bedroom hotel, set in a beautiful garden area of approximately 20 acres. Its picturesque surroundings make it the perfect spot for enjoying the Portuguese countryside.

The Hotel's 59 bedrooms are classified as Deluxe, Heritage, Grand Deluxe, Deluxe Suite and Royal Suite.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, direct dialing telephone, wireless internet, LCD plasma television, in-room movies, safe, mini bar, slippers, bathrobes, hair-dryer and luxury bathroom amenities.

The Deluxe rooms are located in the hotel's new wing and are luxuriously decorated. They all have spacious terraces overlooking the traditional gardens. The Heritage rooms are located in the old convent. These rooms represent the perfect combination of tasteful decor and modern technology.

At the old convent, close to the bell tower, and accessible by a narrow, medieval staircase, is the Grand Deluxe. It is an extra-spacious room with a combined bedroom/lounge area, once used by princes. This room also has luxury bathroom amenities and Jacazzi Tub.

The Deluxe Suites are in the old convent. These rooms were once used by Portuguese kings when visiting the city of Evora. It has a DVD player, CD player/radio, and Bulgary bathroom amenities.

The Royal Suite, named after King John II of Portugal, is luxuriously decorated and fully equipped with DVD player, CD player/radio and Bulgary bathroom amenities. The bathroom is also equipped with an LCD plasma television and a beautiful bathtub designed by Philip Stark. The private terrace situated above the suite offers a delightful view of the city of Evora.

The Divinus, a gourmet restaurant, is located in the old wine-cellar, offering Mediterranean cuisine and Alentejo flavours. The restaurant has a smart and elegant atmosphere. Reservation is recommended. The Claustrous restaurant serves "a la carte" lunches, with Mediterranean cuisine. It is situated in the convent`s beautiful cloisters and offers a relaxing atmosphere.
The Pulpitus Bar is located in the old kitchen used by the monks, this bar serves refreshments, cocktails and snacks in a cosy atmosphere.

Located in the gothic water store, the Wine-Bar is the ideal place for pre-dinner relaxation and savouring of the extensive collection of regional and international wines. There is also an expert sommelier to assist with private wine-tasting.

The Health Club is air conditioned with natural daylight and overlooks the outdoor pool and the olive garden. The equipment available is of lastest technology. The "Diana Spa" features 5 treatment rooms and 1 relaxation room, a heated indoor pool, Hot Tub, sauna and Turkish bath.
